Way to go . . . . ESPN The Magazine

Photo © Larry Sultan

In my follow up to last weeks post about photo editing here, my first shout out for an interesting photographer/magazine collaboration I have come across goes to ESPN The Magazine and perennial 'Whats the Jackanory ?' favorite Larry Sultan. I am not going to go all deep and analytical on the pictures/layout or discuss the merits of the photographs as signature images in these posts but this was a pleasant surprise as I was thumbing my way through the latest issue.

Here's to you ESPN The Magazine and Larry Sultan !

Back in the day--as they say--when I was about to leave the San Francisco Art Institute where Larry Sultan was on the faculty, he wanted to know my plans. I told him that I had plans to shoot commercially, for money. This revelation didn't sit well with Larry probably due to the political ramifications of commerce or capitalism. With that as background it's nice to see Sultan do well commercially.

I don't know. If you take away the great layout and the LS name would you still be excited about this image? I think there is a tendancy to look at a photograph and then look at the byline and reevaluate the image given the context of the photographer's other work. You can't look at this image without thinking about Larry's family and valley series but taken out of that framework does this image hold up on its own?

I am excited by this image, thats the point in this post, after all the debate in previous posts and on the photoblogosphere concerning fine art photographers and editorial photography in particular, its not about quality per se of this image and the pedigree of the photographer who produced it but the fact that the initial idea was good, someone at the magazine made an inspired choice of photographer at the inception of this assignment
, I think anyways.

I want to draw attention to fine editing @ some of the more mainstream magazines where it is a little more unexpected then at the New York Times Magazine and celebrate that or @ least that which inspires me.

I hope that someone somewhere (apart from KR) is inspired by your copy stand series and gives you the chance to apply it for them with a meaningful and challenging gig.

I happen to think it's a fine image--not great, still. In particular I like how a magazine known for presenting over-amped images goes for serene suburabn with this photo. The subject stands perfectly and naturally illuminated with a contrasting patch of darker lawn. Then the coiling of the hose is controlled and extended by the stream of water. This bit of linear activity continues into the frame of the backboard, the circular hoop and finally the netting--3 points.
